VDD Guide
VDD Dongle Hardware Versions
The VDD hardware version determines which Volvo platforms are supported and which mobile network technology the dongle can use.
There are two main differences between VDD 1X, VDD 2X, and VDD 3X hardware versions:
Supported Volvo Platforms
The supported vehicle platform determines which Volvo models and functions the VDD dongle can work with.
Mobile Network Technology
The radio technology determines which mobile networks the dongle can use for online communication and coverage.
VDD 1X
Supports Volvo P1, P2, and P3 car platforms, except S/V40 1st generation.
VDD 1X does not support many SPA/CMA features, because it does not have the third CAN channel required for communication through add-on CANALT cabling. This affects functions such as door and window statuses, parking heater commands, and remote engine start.
VDD 2X
Supports Volvo P1, P2, P3, SPA, and CMA platforms, except S/V40 1st generation.
VDD 3X
Supports Volvo P1, P2, P3, SPA, and CMA platforms, except S/V40 1st generation.
VDD 1X
Supports GSM 2G radio.
Coverage is available in EU 28 countries where the 2G GSM network is still in operation.
VDD 2X
Supports GSM 2G radio.
Coverage is available in EU 28 countries where the 2G GSM network is still in operation.
VDD 3X
Supports 2G and 4G GSM networks, specifically LTE-CATM and LTE-NB.
Coverage includes EU 28 countries, Switzerland, Norway, USA, Canada, and Japan where 2G, 4G CATM, or NBIOT GSM networks are in operation.
Note: Worldwide version is available on request.
The VDD hardware version is encoded in the serial number.
In the example below, the sticker shows a VDD 3X version.

Final Takeaway
VDD 1X, VDD 2X, and VDD 3X differ mainly by supported car platforms and mobile network technology. VDD 3X provides the widest platform and 4G/LTE network support, making it the preferred option where 2G coverage is limited or being phased out.
