VCM Battery Reset

Overview

The VCM, or Vehicle Connectivity Module, is responsible for several important connectivity and telematics functions in Volvo vehicles. It supports emergency services, remote connectivity, internet and Wi-Fi functions, and diagnostic communication across the car's internal network.

The VCM can automatically contact emergency response and transmit your GPS location if an airbag deploys. It also powers Volvo Cars app features such as remote engine start, lock/unlock, and vehicle tracking. In supported vehicles, it can act as a data client or mobile hotspot using an internal SIM card.

When the VCM backup battery reaches the end of its expected lifetime or drops voltage, the vehicle may display a service warning even if the main telematics system still appears to work. After replacing the VCM backup battery, a software reset is usually required to clear the warning permanently. VDASH can perform this VCM battery reset on supported vehicles.

Common VCM issues

• "Volvo On Call Service Required" message: This warning frequently appears on the dashboard.
• Timed battery life: The VCM contains a small backup battery programmed with a timed life expectancy, usually around 7 to 8 years.
• Battery voltage drop: When the timer expires or the backup battery drops voltage, the car displays a service notification even if the primary telematics system still works.
• Required reset: Replacing the backup battery usually requires specialized software such as VDASH, or a software reset at one of our PRO / PRO Verified dealers, to clear the dashboard code permanently.

Platform support in VDASH

• P3 platform: VDASH can perform the VCM battery reset without any additional requirements.
• SPA / CMA platforms: VDASH can also perform the VCM battery reset, but these platforms require the VCM IMMO PIN.
• VCM IMMO PIN: VDASH is not able to decode this PIN. The customer has to obtain the PIN themselves.
