Programming modules in Volvo cars –
is it possible to "kill" them during software loading?
Primary bootloader
Programming modules in Volvo cars
When powering up any Volvo electronic control module, the primary bootloader starts (PBL) for 20 ms (0.02 seconds). During this time, if the control module receives a programming command (PROG), the control module enters programming mode, and it is possible to erase and reload the main / application software.
Programming command
VIDA and VDASH programming command timing
The programming command is sent by VIDA for approximately 2 seconds. With VDASH, it is sent for 5 seconds or 60 seconds in EMERGENCY mode, so that all control modules have time to execute the command and enter programming mode. If no programming command is sent, the control module's application software takes over the function of the control module.
If a reset command is sent to the control modules in programming mode, the control modules will enter normal operating mode and start the main / application software.
Important note
Do not panic during software loading
The primary bootloader means that it is always possible for a control module to enter programming mode, even if the application software has been corrupted, for example during unsuccessful downloading.
So do not panic if something happens during software loading.
