Generic J2534 Device Support
Expanded hardware compatibility for VDASH diagnostics and ECU programming
For many years, VDASH supported only DiCE units for diagnostics and ECU programming. DiCE hardware is well-tested, proven, and remains a reliable option for most VDASH operations.
Genuine DiCE interfaces are perfectly suitable for VDASH. However, some Chinese clone units may suffer from quality issues, which can make certain VDASH operations unstable or even impossible to complete.
We are now gradually expanding VDASH support to include generic J2534-compatible devices. There are many devices available on the market, but the most suitable options are generally those compatible with SUPER J2534.
Recommended J2534 Hardware
SUPER J2534
Devices compatible with SUPER J2534 currently provide the best overall compatibility and performance for VDASH among generic J2534 options.
Drivers:
- Windows 64-bit: J2534_Driver_x64.msi
- Windows 32-bit: J2534_Driver_x86.msi
Alternative Hardware
VXDIAG, VCM II / Rotunda Diagnostics, or VCX-NANO
Another supported option is VXDIAG, including VCM II / Rotunda Diagnostics compatible devices and VCX-NANO interfaces.
Basic diagnostics appear to work, and DIM language operations have also been tested. Overall functionality is broadly similar, but we have observed significant performance penalties compared with DiCE or SUPER J2534 devices.
For example, P3 CEM PIN decoding can be many times slower than technically feasible when using VXDIAG hardware.
Important Warning
We do not recommend using VXDIAG for ECU programming
including language changes, configuration changes, or engine optimizations.
Using VXDIAG for ECU programming is done entirely at your own risk.
Currently Supported J2534 Hardware
| Device | Status | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| SUPER J2534 | Recommended | Best overall compatibility and performance among generic J2534 options. |
| Genuine Volvo DiCE | Supported | Proven and reliable hardware for VDASH diagnostics and ECU programming. Genuine units are recommended; some clone units may suffer from quality issues. |
| Chinese DiCE Clone | Supported | Chinese clone units can vary in build quality, which may cause some VDASH operations to become unreliable or fail to complete. |
| VXDIAG / VCM II / VCX-NANO | Partially supported | Suitable for basic diagnostics, but not recommended for ECU programming due to performance limitations. |
