User Guide

For Bluetooth module BT Volvo P2v2

 1.        Introduction

Because the update is based on the original Phone Module (PHM) all the control of this updated module is same as an original one. So it’s recommended to be familiar with the PHM before you do the update. This User Guide is focused to the differences.

1.1.        The minimum you should do after first run

  • Set the correct communication speed. It’s very likely that this settings will not be necessary. Some (maybe all) PHMs are able to change communication speed if the Bluetooth module is not responding. Just wait at around 5 minutes and you will see if you have to do manually.
  • Change the language
  • Set the radio mode
  • Update the firmware to the latest version
  • Do the testing call and check if microphone and speaker volume are OK

 2.        Software update

In the case the new software version is released it’s possible to do the Bluetooth module update. This update is divided into two main steps:

  • The Update mode activation.
  • Send the update via Bluetooth.

Caution:

Please have a look before update if your device is in the list of non-compatible devices in the Appendix A.

Apple iPhone does not support the OBEX or the OPP protocol so you cannot use it for the update. But you can use without any other restrictions.

Caution:

Do not activate an actualization if you have not a supported device close to you and you have not a proper firmware file. Otherwise the Bluetooth module stays in an update mode and it is temporary not usable (until you upload a proper firmware).

2.1.        Download the latest firmware package

The latest version of the firmware is available here. There are all files required for the update and also examples for the settings.

            2.2.        The Update mode activation

There are two options how to do it.

Caution:

As a first read the whole procedure before you make an decision to turn on an update mode.

If the firmware file name is wrong or the firmware file is damaged or you use a non-compatible device (for file transfer) then the Bluetooth module stays in an update mode even after power is restored.

The only way how to leave this mode is to strictly follow whole procedure.

Warning:

I would recommend you to pair the device which you want to use for the update before you activate this mode.

On the older firmwares if pairing approval is required there is a situation where you are not able to approve a pairing! If this situation happens then you have to remove the Bluetooth module out of the car and contact us.

2.2.1.        Activation from the Phone module

Disconnect all devices from the Bluetooth module (dial “***” on the PHM). Open the Phonebook (“green” button and then “arrow left”). Select the “1: Update” option and press the “green” button. You will see “Insert SIM...” on the dashboard so the Bluetooth module is ready to update. It’s recommended to set the radio to the Bluetooth module source. After the actualizacion mode is activated then the Bluetooth module will stop communicate with radio and the “ERROR” message on the radio appears.

2.2.2.        Activation via Bluetooth (advanced users)

Send the file “boot_loader.run” via Bluetooth. Try do it after all contacts were read out. You can use the laptop (“Send -> Bluetooth”) or smartphone (“Share -> Bluetooth”) just be sure that the device is already paired.

            2.3.        Updating the module

The new firmware file must be named “btphone_p2v2.btb”. After the Bluetooth module is ready to update send the file via Bluetooth. You can use the laptop (“Send -> Bluetooth”) or smartphone (“Share -> Bluetooth”). After the file is sent the message on the dashboard will disappear (after at around 10 seconds). If the radio is set to Bluetooth module then “ERROR” message disappears too. After a while you can see the new firmware version on the dashboard. It looks like incoming call but do not press any button and wait until ringing. After that the Bluetooth module will start looking for a paired device.

 3.        Settings (via Phonebook)

The PHM phonebook is used for the settings. Disconnect all devices and enter the Phonebook (“green” button and then “arrow left”). Now you are in the setting.

            3.1.        Language

The language options always start with “2: ”. Choose some and accept it by pressing the “green” button.

Note:

This language settings affects just this settings entries. The others Bluetooth module texts are possible to change as needed (see below).

            3.2.        Microphone volume

The microphone volume options are “A: Mic. x” where the “x” is the number 1 - 5 and it means volume size. The default value is “1”. Choose some and accept it by pressing the “green” button.

            3.3.        Speaker volume

The speaker volume options are “A: Speaker x” where the “x” is the number 1 - 5 and it means volume size. The default value is “1”. Choose some and accept it by pressing the “green” button.

Caution:

Be caution with selection of higher values. In combination with higher volume on the cellphone it can cause sound distortion also if you listen a music in radio via Bluetooth. If you set the speaker volume to 5 the distortion appears after 50% of the device volume settings.

            3.4.        Bluetooth mode

You can choose from these modes:

  • Bluetooth Hands-Free and audio streaming
  • Just Bluetooth audio streaming

3.4.1.        Bluetooth Hands-Free and audio streaming mode

In this mode you can use the Phone module as a hands-free and listen a music (if not active call) in radio via Bluetooth. It’s a default settings. If you want to set this mode choose “B: HFP + A2DP” option and accept it by pressing the “green” button.

                        3.4.2.        Just Bluetooth audio mode

In this mode you can just listen a music (if not active call) in radio via Bluetooth. If active call then it’s used a microphone and speaker from the cellphone. If you want to set this mode choose “B: A2DP” option and accept it by pressing the “green” button.

            3.5.        Phonebook readout mode

The phonebook readout takes a while and the Phone module has a limited amount of space. It’s depends on the original GSM modem inside and it’s:

  • Ericsson: 350 contacts
  • Wavecom: 500 contacts

Therefore it’s possible to choose one of these readout modes:

  • Standard readout mode
  • Intelligent readout mode
  • Readout turned off

                        3.5.1.        Phonebook turned on

The total contacts capacity of the PHM is limited. So the entries are buffered into Bluetooth module. The Bluetooth module does not read out contacts just from the Phonebook but at first it use contacts from last dialled, received and missed calls. After that if any free space remains then it fill in with phonebook entries. If the Bluetooth module is buffering then you see “Syncing...” on the dashboard. If all entries are buffered the Bluetooth module is reinitialized and you see connected device name. It’s a bigger chance that incoming call is from phonebook. If you want to set this mode choose “M: Cont. on” (or M: Cont. std) option and accept it by pressing the “green” button.

                        3.5.2.        Phonebook turned off

Phonebook entries are not read out. The only advantage is fast connection. If you want to set this mode choose “M: Cont. off” option and accept it by pressing the “green” button.

3.6.        Voice control activation via radio

You can also activate the voice control feature via radio. It uses the "next track" button on radio (see chapter 5.5).

                        3.6.1.        Enable voice control activation

If you want to enable then choose “RS: VC on” option and accept it by pressing the “green” button.

Caution:

Be aware that if enabled then delay between single press of "next track" button and skipping the track is 1-2 seconds now. It is due to multi-functionality for this button.

                        3.6.2.        Disable voice control activation

If you want to enable then choose “RS: VC off” option and accept it by pressing the “green” button.

            3.7.        Radio mode

The Bluetooth module is able to use radio in the following modes:

  • CD-CHANGER
  • MD-CHANGER
  • SATELLITE (SAT)

                        3.7.1.        CD-CHANGER mode

This mode is supported by all Volvo HU radios. The only disadvantage is that it’s not able to display track tags (Track name, Album and Artist). The HU radios allows to connect up to 2 CD-CHANGER devices so there are also 2 options in the settings menu. If you want to set this mode choose “R: CD-C” or “R: CD-C 2” option and accept it by pressing the “green” button.

                        3.7.2.        MD-CHANGER mode

This mode is supported by Volvo HU-x0x radios. The main advantage is that you can see track tags (Track name, Album and Artist). If you enable a text information it always moves from right to left which can be distracting. This is the reason why you can choose from 4 types of this mode:

  • “R: MD-C” - text circulates constantly.
  • “R: MD-C 1x” - text runs just 1x and then display stays empty.
  • “R: MD-C 2x” - text runs just 2x and then display stays empty.
  • “R: MD-C 3x” - text runs just 3x and then display stays empty.

If the song is change then the new text information will runs depending on the settings. If you want to set this mode choose one of these options and accept it by pressing the “green” button.

                        3.7.3.        SAT mode

This mode is supported by Volvo HU-x5x radios. The main advantage is that you can see track tags (Track name, Album and Artist). If you want to set this mode choose “R: SAT” option and accept it by pressing the “green” button.

            3.8.        Managing paired devices

This entries are shown only if the original GSM modem is Wavecom. If the original GSM modem is Ericsson then the management is carried out another way. These entries always starts with “P: ” and the name of paired device. If you select some device and accept it by pressing the “green” button then the selected device is removed from the list of paired devices.

 4.        Settings (via Bluetooth)

This setting is not supported by iPhone because it’s not able to send a file via Bluetooth.

            4.1.        Modem type

The newer cars (they have HU-x5x radios) use Phone module (PHM) with GSM modem set to different baudrate. So it’s necessary to change the communication speed. It’s make by sending “btphone_cfg.bmb” file via Bluetooth. This file is part of the firmware package.

Send the “cfg/modem-original/btphone_cfg.bmb” file via Bluetooth if the GSM modem was:

  • Ericsson GM 22
  • Wavecom Q2303A-C

Send the “cfg/modem-facelift/btphone_cfg.bmb” file via Bluetooth if the GSM modem was:

  • Wavecom Q2406A-C

If the Phone module still not work then turn off the Phone module, wait at around 5 minutes and turn it on. The firmware update has no affect the setting.

Poznámka:

If you put the Bluetooth module into different car then don’t forget to change this settings.

            4.2.        Module name (Bluetooth name)

If you want to change Bluetooth module name it’s not problem. Edit the file “btphone_cfg.bnm” (it’s part of the package) and send it via Bluetooth.

Poznámka:

If you save this file in UTF-8 format then it’s possible to use diacritic chars.

            4.3.        Bluetooth module text settings

You are able to change these texts:

  • Text on the dashboard (operator name) if device isn’t connected.
  • Radio information if incoming call (MD-CHANGER or SAT)
  • Radio information if outgoing call (MD-CHANGER or SAT)
  • Long message on the radio if music paused (max. 16 chars, just MD-CHANGER)
  • Long message on the radio if playing music (max. 16 chars, just MD-CHANGER)
  • Long message on the radio if active call (max. 16 chars, just MD-CHANGER)
  • Short message on the radio if music paused (max. 8 chars, just SAT)
  • Short message on the radio if playing music (max. 8 chars, just SAT)
  • Short message on the radio if active call (max. 8 chars, just SAT)

If you don’t like default texts you can edit the “btphone_cfg.btx” file (part of the firmware package) and send it via Bluetooth. Do not use diacritic chars.

 5.        Bluetooth Hands-Free

            5.1.        Pairing

There are 3 options how to pair. The first one is for devices don’t support Bluetooth v2.1 and above. 2 others are for devices supporting Bluetooth v2.1 and above. It’s possible to pair the new device only if Bluetooth module isn’t connected with any. All these setting are in the Phone module (PHM) Settings.

                        5.1.1.        Pairing with PIN

If the device doesn’t support Bluetooth v2.1 and above then you have to enter a pairing PIN. The default value is “0000”. You can change the PIN in Phone module setting on those 2 places:

  • (54) Menu -> Nastavení -> SIM zabezp. -> Vybrat “Zap” nebo “Vyp”

It’s also changes the pairing mode for the devices supporting Bluetooth v2.1 And above (see below). If you are asked to enter the PIN then enter the PIN you want to have.

  • (551) Menu -> Nastavení -> Upravit kódy -> PIN kód

This option will only change the PIN code. You will asked to enter old PIN. Ignore it and enter any. The new PIN is the PIN you want to have. The PIN must be acknowledged.

                        5.1.2.        Automatic pairing

If the device supports Bluetooth v2.1 and above this is one of the option how to pair. If you set this potion you don’t have to enter the PIN during pairing process. This mode is sets here:

  • (54) Menu -> Nastavení -> SIM zabezp. -> Vybrat “Vyp”

After you are asked to enter old pin then enter the PIN you want to have for devices don’t support Bluetooth v2.1 and above (Chapter 5.1.1).

This mode is set as a default.

                        5.1.3.        Pairing with confirmation

If the device supports Bluetooth v2.1 and above this is one of the option how to pair. If this mode is set and you want to pair the new device the a prompt to confirm will appear on the dashboard. It looks like incoming call and the phone number is a pairing code. If you press “green” button then you accept the pairing. If you press “red” button then the pairing is denied. This mode is sets here:

  • (54) Menu -> Nastavení -> SIM zabezp. -> Vybrat “Zap”

After you are asked to enter old pin then enter the PIN you want to have for devices don’t support Bluetooth v2.1 and above (Chapter 5.1.1).

5.2.        Managing paired devices (Ericsson modems only)

You can connect to the paired device or you can remove the paired device from the list of paired devices. This is possible to do only if Bluetooth module is not connected to any device.

                        5.2.1.        Manual device connection

You can connect to the device from the list of last dialled numbers. You can access to the list by pressing “green” button twice. Select the device (by the name) you want to connect and press the “green” button.

                        5.2.2.        Remove device

You can remove device from the list of paired devices in the list of missed calls. The list is located here:

  • (11) Menu -> Sezn. hovorů -> Ztracené h.

Select the device (by the name) you want to remove and press the “green” button.

5.3.        Answer and reject the call

Answer and reject is same like before (with the GSM modem). You can reject the call by pressing “red” button or you can also do it directly on the cellphone. The only difference is if you accept the call directly on the cellphone. The original GSM modem has not an option like this so the call must be terminated (only virtually in the Phone module) and Bluetooth module creates a new virtual incoming call. So if you answer the call on the cellphone you will see the new incoming call “Bluetooth” on the dashboard. If you press “green” button then the call is forwarded to the Phone module. If you press “red” button the call will moves to the cellphone’s microphone and speaker.

            5.4.        Outgoing calls

You can use the same options like before (with the GSM modem). You can also create a call from the cellphone. But in this case you will also see the “virtual” incoming call like in the chapter before. If you press “green” button then the call is forwarded to the Phone module. If you press “red” button the call will moves to the cellphone’s microphone and speaker.

            5.5.        Microphone activation

If you want to use voice commands then you have to activate in-car microphone. This microphone is activated only during voice calls so the "virtual" call have to be created. It's possible to do it by this way:

  • Microphone request on the cellphone
  • Dial a contact “!Microphone”
  • By the double press the “next track” (within 1 second) button on the radio (you can also use the button on the steering wheel, except SAT mode). You have to had enabled it (disabled as default, see chapter 3.6).

It's possible to activate the microphone only if the cellphone is connected also as the Hands-Free (applies also for the other device). If the connected device does not support Hands-Free mode (most of tablets or if it's disabled in the cellphone settings) then it's not possible to activate the microphone on this device.

5.5.1.        Microphone request on the cellphone

If you use an application which required the microphone or if you activate a microphone request somehow on the cellphone then the incomming call "!Microphone" appears. Accept it by the "green" button to get access to the microphone or reject it by the "red" button.

                        5.5.2.        Dial a contact “!Microphone”

This contact contains exclamation mark as the first to be on the first place in the phonebook or close to the first place. If you dial this contact then the Bluetooth module will send voice command activation request.

5.5.3.        The double press the “next track” button

By the double press the “next track” button (in one second) you activate the incoming call "!Microphone". After accept by the "green" button the Bluetooth module will send voice command activation request. Reject it by the "red" button to cancel the request.

 6.        Connecting two devices in the same time

The Bluetooth module supports connection of two devices in the same time. If the Bluetooth module is turned on this mode is always disabled.

In this mode the first device is connected only as Hands-Free and the second one is used for music, navigation commands, etc.

              1.1.        Turn mode on

Dial the “*0#” number on the PHM. Now you can connect the second device. Until the second device is not connected the music plays from the first device.

In the case that you disconnect the second device then the mode is not disabled and you can connect another one or the same device again. If the device is disconnected then the module does not try to search it.

              1.2.        Turn mode off

Dial the “#0*” number on the PHM. If the second device is connected then the Bluetooth will automatically disconnect it and moves audio into the first device.

 7.        Radio

How to set the radio into required mode is described in the Radio mode settings. You can change the song by pressing “previous” or “next” button in all modes. Only in the SAT mode these buttons works just on the radio not on the steering wheel.

              7.1.        CD-CHANGER mode

You can’t see the song’s tags in this mode. The only feature in the mode is current or remaining time of the song. It’s activated by pressing “fast forward” button (current time) or “fast rewind” button (remaining time). It’s disabled by pressing “PUSH SCAN”.

              7.2.        MD-CHANGER mode

You can also use the time feature described in the chapter before. But the main advantage is song’s tags. The information is not enabled in default so if you want to see it you have to press the “PUSH MEM” button.

  • The first press you will see the track information. The order is as follows: Song’s title / Author / Album. If the radio is not muted during the call you see the information regarding the call. The order is as follows: Phone number / type of the call / caller’s name. The caller’s name is shown just if the iPhone is connected.
  • The second press you will see the Bluetooth module status (paused, audio play or active call).
  • The third press you will see back the disc and the track number.

              7.3.        SATELITTE (SAT) mode

The main advantage is song’s tags. What is on the screen is selected by the pressing “RND” button. It has 4 pages:

  • The main page: Bluetooth module status (paused, audio play or active call) and the song’s number.
  • The second page: Author name. If active call then the call type information (incoming or outgoing).
  • The third page: Album name. If active call then the caller’s phone number.
  • The fourth page: Song’s title. If active call then the caller’s name. The caller’s name is shown just if the iPhone is connected.

The information is static so the limited length is 16 chars.
